Looking for something fun and interesting to plan for your next family trip? When you visit the Appalachian Mountains in and around Mount Mitchell NC, the tallest mountain peak in the Eastern North America, you can spend an afternoon at one of the idyllic local farms. Agro-tourism is a growing industry in the country and no where is that as evident as in Western North Carolina. Lots of small and sustainable farms have cropped up in the last few years, and each offers a unique experience. Kids love these kinds of places and we know you and your family will, too! In addition to the Orchard at Altapass, where you can pick fresh apples and enjoy hayrides and other fun farm activities, there are a few other local farms that you should take time to visit.
The Mountain Farm is a 24-acre lavender and blueberry farm that also raises a small herd of Saanen and Nubian goats for goat milk for their soap and bath products. At the farm, you can feed the goats, including the babies in the spring, pick fresh blueberries to take home and walk the amazing fields of lavender as its blooming during the months from June to September. The farm sells its own handcrafted goat milk products including some wonderful soaps. The Lavender Festival NC takes place in mid-June each year and is a wonderful weekend of workshops, garden tours and other fun and educational events.
Sunshot Organics is
the place to visit if you want to pick your own strawberries, blackberries
or blueberries. This farm is locally known as Don Taylor's Old Berry Patch to old-timers, yet
visitors are welcome to stop by, as well. You can pick your own—as many as you want!—from mid-May to July.
If you want to pet some animals, and check out some truly adorable furry friends, visit Apple Hill Farm which is located just a short drive away in Banner Elk. Apple Hill is a unique alpaca farm where you can see what a real working farm is like. Farm owners take you through a tour where you will meet the alpacas and have a chance to feed them, and you'll see a lot of other neat animals along the way, as well!
